1940年10月15日にアメリカ合衆国で初公開され、未だに伝説になっている映画「独裁者」のラストの名シーン。この動画を見るたびに、社会について考えさせられます。
いまの日本や世界の情勢に対して、はたして僕達は考えているのだろうか。
昔よりも今のほうが良い社会だと胸をはって言えるのだろうか。
1940年当時、まだまだサイレント映画とトーキー映画（映像に音声を重ねた、いまの映画の原型）とが入り乱れている時代。
今の時代に比べて、映像表現や映像技術が発達していなかった時代。それでも、この映像から伝わっているものは、当時の時代を反映し、社会情勢を批判するメディアとして、ここまで確立したものはないと思うと同時に、まさにいまの時代でさえも当てはまる普遍なのだと思う。
当時の権力者を批判することがどれだけ大きなことか。そしてそれを笑いと言葉で痛切に批判していることが、はたして今の時代の私たちが行えていることだろうか。はたして、ここで述べれている言葉を、私たちも、考え、表現できるのだろうか。今一度考えてみようと思う。

申し訳ないが、私は皇帝などなりたくない。それは私のやりたいことではない。誰に対しても支配や征服などしたくない。ただ、できれば皆を助けたいのだ。ユダヤ人、キリスト教徒、黒人や白人の皆を。
We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness – not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there’s room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.
私たちは皆、お互い助けたいと思っている。人間とはそういうものだ。他人の不幸ではなく、お互いの幸せで生きたい。私たちはお互い憎みあったり、軽蔑したりなんかしたくない。この世界には一人一人場所がある。大地は豊かで、皆に恵みを与えてくれるものだ。
The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men’s souls – has barricaded the world with hate – has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in.
人は美しく自由に生きられるはずなのに、私たちは道を失ってしまった。貪欲が人の魂を毒し、憎しみをこめて世界をバリケードで封鎖してしまったのだ。貪欲が私たちを悲劇と殺戮へと軍隊歩調で追いやったのだ。私たち人間はスピードを開発してきたが、自分自身を閉じ込める結果となってしまった。
Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.
富を生み出すはずの機械が、私たちをどんどん貧乏にしてきた。知識は私たちを皮肉屋にした。知恵は私たちを非情で冷酷にした。私たちは考えてばかりで、感じることが出来なくなってしまった。機械が増えれば増えるほど、私たちには人類愛がより必要なのだ。知識が増えれば増えるほど、優しさや思いやりが必要なのだ。そうでなければ、人生は暴力で満ち、すべてを失ってしまう。
The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in man – cries for universal brotherhood – for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world – millions of despairing men, women, and little children – victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.
飛行機やラジオのおかげで、私たちはお互いの距離を縮めることができるようになった。こういった発明品の本質は、人間の良心や、国境を越えた兄弟愛や、私たちが団結することを強く訴えかけることにある。今でさえも、私の声は世界中の何百万人もの人々のもとに届いている。絶望している男女や子供たちのもとに。罪のない人たちを拷問し投獄する組織の犠牲者のもとに。
To those who can hear me, I say: ‘Do not despair.’ The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed – the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.
いま、私の声が届いている人達に言おう。「絶望してはいけない」と。いま私たちの上に覆いかぶさっている不幸というのは、貪欲がただ通過しているだけにすぎない。人間の進歩を恐れている人たちの敵意にすぎないのだ。憎しみは消え去り、独裁者たちは死に絶えるだろう。民衆から奪いとった権力は、また民衆のもとに戻るだろう。人間は永遠に生きることはできないのだから、自由は決して滅びることはないのだ。
Soldiers! Don’t give yourselves to brutes – men who despise you and enslave you – who regiment your lives – tell you what to do – what to think and what to feel! Who drill you – diet you – treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder.
兵士たちよ！獣に身をまかせてはいけない！奴らは、君たちを軽蔑し、奴隷にし、生活を管理する。君たちが何をすべきか口を出してくる。考え方や感情にまで指図する！思想を叩きこみ、決められた食事を与え、家畜のように君たちを扱い、砲弾の餌食として使うだけだ。
Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men – machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don’t hate, only the unloved hate – the unloved and the unnatural!
こんな自然に反する人間たちに身をあずけてはいけない！こんな機械の頭と機械の心を持った機械人間に！君たちは機械じゃない！君たちは家畜じゃない！君たちは人間なのだ！君たちは心に人類愛を持った人間だ。憎んではいけない。愛を知らない者だけが憎むのだ。
Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of St Luke, it is written the kingdom of God is within man not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people, have the power – the power to create machines. The power to create happiness!
兵士よ！奴隷になるために闘うな！自由のために闘え！『ルカによる福音書』の１７章に、「神の国はあなたがたの中にある」と書かれている。神の国は一人の人間や特定の人たちの中にあるのではない。一人一人、君たちのなかにあるのだ。君たち民衆は力を持っているのだ。機械を作り、幸せを生み出す力が！
You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful – to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of democracy – let us use that power – let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world – a decent world that will give men a chance to work – that will give youth a future and old age a security.
君たちには力がある。人生を自由で美しくする力が！人生を素晴らしい冒険にする力が！だから、民主主義の名のもとに、この力を使おうではないか！みんなで団結しよう！新しい世界のために闘おう！皆に雇用の機会を与えよう。若者に未来を与え、老人に保障を与えよう。そんなまともな世界のために闘おう！
By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people. Now let us fight to fulfil that promise!
獣たちもこういった公約をかかげて権力を手にしたのだ。だが、嘘だった。奴らは公約を守らなかった。これからも実現させることはない！独裁者たちは自分だけを自由にし、民衆を奴隷にしたのだ。さあ、この約束を実現させるために闘おうではないか！
Let us fight to free the world – to do away with national barriers – to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason – a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us unite!
闘おう、世界を解放するために。国境を取り除くために。貪欲と憎しみと不寛容をなくすために。闘おう、分別ある世界のために。科学と進歩がすべての人たちの幸福へと導くような世界のために。兵士たちよ！民主主義の名のもとに、団結しよう！
Hannah, can you hear me? Wherever you are, look up Hannah. The clouds are lifting! The sun is breaking through! We are coming out of the darkness into the light. We are coming into a new world – a kindlier world, where men will rise above their hate, their greed and their brutality. Look up, Hannah!

The soul of man has been given wings and at last he is beginning to fly. He is flying into the rainbow – into the light of hope, into the future, the glorious future that belongs to you, to me, and to all of us. Look up, Hannah… look up!
